Midsummer Madness

By the time you read this the memories of a hot summer Sunday in June have probably long been forgotten and replaced by searching for that jumper or cardigan as the cooler days of autumn draw in.

Mid Mad!Mid Mad!Mid Mad!

The sun shone for us this year on June 21st – the day of the official Summer Solstice and the annual Midsummer Madness at Leon Recreation.

Very much a family fun day and village fete atmosphere and judging by the crowds who attended it was another successful year.  We ‘guestimate’ that there were over 3,000 people in Leon Park this year.

It was great to see all ages and areas of the community enjoying themselves – from family picnics and games under the trees, the many people watching the wheelchair football through to the ever-popular beer tent, local fundraising tombolas or folk just ‘kicking back ‘and listening to the music and watching the festivities.

New for this year were the hunting dog, birds of prey display and ferret racing.  These all proved really popular with the children with Gamegoer Country Displays explaining how working hunting dogs are trained to find, chase and flush out prey. What we need to remember is that these are real working animals and not just used for display purposes so a great opportunity to see everyday life in action in the heart of Bletchley.

Our regulars provided family fun and entertainment once again; The Anglian Championship Wrestling Club provided wrestling displays and World Record keepy-uppy champion Dan Magness entertained all with his football skills.  The Punch & Judy show and fairground rides were well attended, the gladiator foam podium knockout proved a real hit, whilst the ‘Security Guard’ Stilt walkers kept everyone amused and under control.

The ever popular ‘Fun Run’ round the park attracted close to 100 children this year.  Proceeds from this event went to Muscular Dystrophy.

The organising committee would like to thank all the stallholders and exhibitors for making the day such a success as well as the many volunteers without whose help we just wouldn’t be able to host the event. A special thank you must go to Tescos in the Community volunteers.

We are always on the look out for new and interesting ideas for each year and we are starting to plan Midsummer Madness 2010 now so if you have any ideas or suggestions on what you would like to see next year please send them to the Town Council Entertainments Committee.
